CSUF’s Math Circle has been around for four years. The Math Circle’s key to fostering involvement and retaining students is teaching participants what they want to learn.

The math circle phenomenon is not confined to Berkeley. Across the country, mathematicians who are frustrated with the state of math education are taking matters into their own hands.

CSU math graduate students Emily Heavner, Justin O’Connor and Patrick Rosse organized two Math Circles classes, for grades 6-8 and grades 3-5, on June 13 as part of Kids College.

Math Circles focus on process, exploring, playing with numbers, instead one right answer. Children and teachers who were previously afraid of math are having fun.

Ithaca Math Circle operated out of Dewitt Middle School last semester, but has expanded into Boynton Middle School this semester with the goal of serving more students.
